AVODAH

AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps integrates work for social change, Jewish learning and community building. It provides an opportunity for Jews in their 20’s to live out and deepen their commitments to Jewish life and social change through a year of work in low-income communities in New York City and Washington, D.C. During their year of service, participants live and study together, forming a community of people making a connection between social activism and Jewish life. After participants complete this intense one-year program, the AVODAH Alumni Community supports and encourages alumni in their continued work for social change. AVODAH changes the lives of people in poverty by joining with them to improve their neighborhoods and their access to opportunity. Engagement in this sort of work changes our participants' lives as well. AVODAH offers a Jewish framework for that transformation, welcoming Jews of every background into a pluralistic, multi-denominational program. There is no cost for AVODAH. All participants receive health insurance as well as a living stipend to pay for food, rent and other expenses. Student loan deferrals are available. All participants receive a $1,000 exit stipend and most qualify for an AmeriCorps Education Award voucher of up to $4,725 for continued education or repayment of student loans.
