When I was growing up in the former  Soviet Union, I always viewed being Jewish as something of a disability, and I knew that this had to be kept a secret. I witnessed many acts of anti-Semitism and did not want to become a victim. Old ideas are hard to let go and when I came to the United States, I kept this secret inside me. I did not fit into the circles of  “orthodox” Jews because I am much more spiritual than religious in my beliefs and so for the first 10 years in the USA I did not have anything to do with Jews or the Jewish community.

Late in my junior year at Brooklyn College, I discovered this magical little place, which quickly became a “home away from home.” Hillel attracted me at first because of a free trip to Israel, but I stayed and received so much more. I received a sense of Jewish identity and pride that I never knew before. My best times in college were in that corner building on Campus Road and Hillel Place. When I graduated, Nadya, at Hillel came to the rescue and found a job for me during the economic recession of 2001. Even now, in 2010, I am keeping in close contact with the wonderful people who I met in Hillel.

Thank You BC Hillel and thank you Nadya, you two will be in my heart forever!!!
